i have problems with 4.2 causing the screen to blink alot
with using the same settings i use for 3.3.6
but with 3.3.6 it doesn't cause any blinking
im currently using openbsd, but am wanting to switch over to gentoo
with one of my machines (possibly both)
but i want to use XF 3.3.6, and how can i use it
(installing from a source or binary whatever works)
and then after installing it, letting the portage tree know
that i *do* have X installed (so it will not emerge XF4
because it might be a requirement for some other portage package)

thanks
~sky

I hear this. I run 3.3.6, in order to get maximum performance out of my
hardware setup. I did the dirty deed by hand, _after_ disapointment with
XF 4.1, overwriting any binaries. So portage sees the X requirement is
met.

I've really been meaning to ebuild the process up. ( Really trying to
find the time) It's two stepped XF336 source and Xpm lib, then there are
the xcalc et. al extras to do...

Hardest part was finding Xpm lib:
	http://koala.ilog.fr/ftp/pub/xpm/

No problems since, cept forgot to build xcalc, doh!

cheers,
Gontran

Just curious, what kind of hardware setup is that?

If there are a lot of people in this situation maybe we should have
a 3.3.6 ebuild. I am currently using 4.2.0., but without acceleration.
I have been intending for some time to downgrade to 3.3.6, where I know
how to get acceleration to work, but I never got around to it. In
principle I am willing to do this, but I have only submitted ebuilds
in the past for fairly simple packages, so I hope that someone more
competent will volunteer.

We once had a 3.3.6 ebuild, so it probably needs to be added back to the portage tree and maybe updated a little. Submit a bug report if you haven't yet.

PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133 AGP] (rev 0).

VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Riva TnT [NV04] (rev 4).

on a Sylvania 21" CRT that does preposterous resolutions. :)

Grace to the security-minded.
