Hello,
First let me say that I am having alot of fun using/configuring Gentoo. It
is great!
I wanted to make a suggestion in case you guys hadn't thought of it
already. I think it would be great if the Eclipse IDE was available through
portage. I am not sure what would be involved in that as I am still pretty
new to the whole thing. I haven't had time to sit down and look at how you
guys have portage do what it does. I am also not sure what the licensing is
on Eclipse. I do know that it is a really great IDE and it is open source.
If you haven't checked it out already it is at http://www.eclipse.org

Just something that I thought of a minute ago so I thought I would drop you
all a line. Keep up the great work!

Hi,

I'm just installing Gentoo at this moment (it takes a fair amount of time
on a modem :), and I've had a few ideas about what I'd like to add to the
emerge script if possible. Do you accept patches from anyone, or does a
perspective developer have to go through some debian-esque procedure?

Anyway, my idea was essentially to do with emerge scheduling and retries
when doing 'emerge system', and just retries in general when doing any
other emerge. I thought since you had three mirrors (at least one of which
appears somewhat unreliable) then emerge could check each one in order of
increasing ping time to establish which site to get a package from. I also
thought that if it got error responses from all three sites it might queue
the item for later download if it wasn't needed for a dependency
immediately, perhaps this could be controlled by a MAXRETRIES variable in
global make configuration file. Do you think this would be worth
implementing, or do you think it would make the system to complex?

Also I noticed that the loopback interface is not started by default, if
the user doesn't start it then they'll notice about the time that Perl
finishes downloading. Is there any reason that this interface isn't started
by the init process?

Anyway, thanks for the time spent on this nifty distribution.

Working on it. Ideally we'd like to compile this from scratch and not
include it as a binary. That is a bit tricky. I will give it a spin
before 1.0, and if it proves stable enough, we'll included it in 1.0.

If want to make certain I don't forget this, make a bug report in
bugs.gentoo.org about it, make it out as an enhancement request.

Kind regards,

Karl T
