Subject: [gentoo-dev] TeX/LaTeX works too...

Message-ID: <20011212132706.3EC4658050@server1.mdy.univie.ac.at> (raw)
if root changes
VARTEXFONTS
to a dir with global write permissions (and sticky bit) set
so that xdvi and dvips can write the generated fonts+metrics
when they are called by a user. The default seems to be
/var/cache/fonts which does not exist.
you can either create that and adjust the permissions.
I set it to /var/lib/texmf/fonts which I created and adjusted
permissions since /var/lib/texmf already exists. (this font-dir
can then also periodically be cleaned do free disk-space...).
The whole thing can also be adjusted by calling 'texconfig'
(which looks better if dialog is installed ;) and adjusting the
parameters for "FONTS".
