But it can be "fixed" (bandaid) by changing the first line of
/usr/bin/xpak
from
#! /usr/bin/python
to
#! /usr/bin/spython
For portage specific modules, shouldn't there be a specific directory that
is added to the sys.path at startup (of each program)?
Can spython be unmerged after python 2.1.X is merged?
Also, should spython be a virtual for python if it does not include
development files? pygtk *requires* one of the sys-devel/python
to be installed -- spython won't do it, and pygtk uses virtual/python
in its depends.
What is the "right" thing to do here?

The right thing to do is for me to release a new version of Portage,
which I will do immediately.
