Hi all,

As you know, KDE (and gnome etc.) now installs into /usr. This means there
are no more multiple versions of kde simultaneously installed. Sorry; I'll
miss it too. Someone who does want multiple versions should compile KDE on
his own into a /opt/kdeX.Y.Z location; do NOT use ebuilds for that, it won't
work.

Because of this, people who upgrade from a previous version of KDE to 2.2.1
or greater (these are the versions that go into /usr) should do the following:

Unmerge your previous version of kde BEFORE merging the new one. You can move
/opt/kdeXYZ/share/config to /usr/share/config to preserve your system-wide
settings; usual kde config update warnings apply.

If you do otherwise, old KDEDIR settings can confuse the installation of the
new KDE, or its running. They shouldn't, but they might.

Technical:
Instead of potential multiple files in /etc/env.d, each specifying a
different kde dir in /opt, there will now be just one file /etc/env.d/kde (no
vrsion number) which will export KDEDIR=/usr for ever and ever.

Also, instead of hardcoding KDEDIR and QTDIR parameters in ebuilds, they
should now be taken from the environment.

Comments?

BTW, anyone who saw what I did with env.d and the 2.2.1 ebuilds so far - as
you probably have noticed, that scheme is flawed and is being replaced. So
don't pay the current ebuilds any attention, I've masked them and am fixing
them.

Euh.. Are those packages fixed now?
I installed them yesterday (now compiling kdemultimedia), without any
problems...
