The `Gentoo Linux 1.0_rc6 "from source" (build) CD Installation' says:

  To install from the build CD, you will need to have a 486+ processor,
  and ideally at least 64 Megabytes of RAM. 

Is the `64 Megabytes of RAM' a serious requirement?  I have only 32M
RAM.  So can't I install from the build CD?

And are there any other methods to boot than CD (for example, floppies)?

You can *try*, but be sure to enable lots of swap first.  Compiling glibc
is very memory intensive, and may not be a pleasurable experience for you.

I do not have broadband access to the machine where I would like to install
GENTOO, although I do have access elsewhere.  Is it reasonable to attemp to
download packages I would be interested in and put them on CD's to use on
the subject machine?  If so, how would I go about that?  I am realatively
new to Linux, but have 10+ years of Unix experience, so I can follow a
general plan.

No problem with that. Just download them somewhere else and copy them over to 
the machine into the "/usr/portage/distfiles" directory. You could even use 
"emerge --buildpkg" on another machine to build binary packages for another 
machine. Stick them into "/usr/portage/packages/All" and use --usepkg on 
emerging. (Dunno if thats the syntax with new portage I'm still on rc6 but as 
you have unix experience you should be able to figure that out :))

yes this should work

With the old FETCHCOMMAND syntax, the probably easiest way would have
been to replace it to:
FETCHCOMMAND="echo \${x} >> filesToDownload"

then start
emerge --fetchonly packagesFromInstallManual gnome mozilla whateverYouWant

the use this file with wget:
wget -i filesToDownload

and put all this files into /usr/portage/distfiles

this should work

Unfortunately I don't know the new syntax for FETCHCOMMAND.
