Hello

When will rc6 be ready? Is there anyway of installing gentoo
without a cd? I can boot the computer to linux so it should
be possible to create a dir for gentoo chroot to it and
install emerge. Has anybody done this? What about installing
from a floppy?

The short answer is yes, there are many ways to get a build image going.
You can used the bootable CD from rc5, you can use boot floppies, you
can wait until drobbins gets this new zdisk stuff going. The
requirements for the system to bootsrap from is that it has kernel 2.4,
networking support, and optionally, reiserfs support and tools.

My usual method of installing gentoo is to start wiht 2 partitions - put slakware on one (iut has reiserfs support), extract the gentoo tbuild tarball on the second partation, chroot and then follow the build-cd steps. works fine. I'll probably put BSD on the slakware partition, but if you wanted after you finished installing it could be wiped and used as /home or /usr...

Question;

I got running quite a few rc5 around, one o'them is the cfx5.tgv.net ... my router at home hooked to a XDSL a couple o'worksttions ...

So if/when i decide to upgrade to rc6 (which i dont really need right now 'cause everything works well ...) will it be possible to somehow "upgrade" or will i have to redo it all ?

1000's thanx.

Working on floppy and cd-based installs (new system) today.

I have created a directory for gentoo and chrooted to it and installed and installed a system successfully.

It should be possible to upgrade, but it will require specific instructions.
Once rc6 is solid (a few weeks after the full release), I'll get people working
on testing rc5->rc6 upgrades so that we can get a solid set of instructions.

Best Regards,
