Under debian I always added the following line to syslog.conf:
*.*				/dev/tty8
so that everything would be logged to the ALT-F8 console.  This
doesn't work under gentoo.  Any idea why?

Unless you setup syslog so its running (if it is just ignore me) then the
reason is because gentoo currently doesn't use syslogd by default.  It
uses the god aweful multilog (part of daemontools) which will hopefully
going away soon... (btw, check out syslog-ng if you are looking for a
syslog replacement ;)

(BTW, any status update from whoever is evaluating monnit? :)
