* [gentoo-dev] Experiences with rc5: emerge clobbering its own config, depmod & emerge screaming, BitchX symlink error [not found] <E15SG94-0004xg-00@cvs.gentoo.org> @ 2001-08-02 9:58 ` Iain Craig 2001-08-02 10:06 ` Daniel Robbins 0 siblings, 1 reply; 12+ messages in thread From: Iain Craig @ 2001-08-02 9:58 UTC (permalink / raw To: gentoo-dev Hi guys, Apologies if any of this has been covered previously. This is just my problem list when installing rc5, which is otherwise wonderful. 1. First off, "emerge rsync" appears to clobber /etc/make.conf and /etc/make.globals. Admittedly my CONFIG_PROTECT was "", allowing such a clobber, but the clobber reset my CONFIG_PROTECT to the default; I think this is by design but is slightly annoying. 2. Depmod -a always shouts about unresolved symbols in all modules, although the modules still work fine. From #gentoo I gather this is a known problem with rc5, and doesn't stop anything working. 3. After an emerge I get a warning about all missing info files. Again, I believe this is a known issue that doesn't stop things working. 4. BitchX installation creates incorrect symlink. Following "emerge bitchx-1.0.18-r2.ebuild", the link /usr/bin/BitchX pointed to something non-existant, instead of the correct /usr/bin/BitchX-1.0c18. Unfortunately I can't remember where precisely it did link as I've already pointed it to where it should be. My setting were default USE flags, CONFIG_PROTECT="", CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu", CFLAGS="-mcpu=i686 -march=i686 -O3 -pipe", CXXFLAGS="-mcpu=i686 -march=i686 -O3 -pipe" Hope this helps. I think this too, perhaps send an email to both the AUTHOR and the last commiter to that package. Another possibility is to add all ebuilds that do this wrong under an wiki-todo so that every developer can look there to see if someone else has found errors in one of your ebuilds. I'm not sure about mine, haven't looked into it yet, so feel free to flame me for broken ebuilds :) Regards, Mikael Hallendal -- Mikael Hallendal micke@codefactory.se CodeFactory AB http://www.codefactory.se/ Office: +46 (0)8 587 583 05 Cell: +46 (0)709 718 918 ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 12+ messages in thread

Thus, I don't think any e-mails are necessary. Developers: do an emerge --pretend, and check the list of broken infos. If one of yours is listed, then fix it. I will do a cvs update before I fix a package to make sure I don't duplicate work (or just to be safe, you can e-mail me if you are going to fix your own).
