When emerging bitchx-gtk I get an esd error during configure.  I
do have esd installed, although not necessarily configured correctly.
In any event, I took "esd" out of USE and re-emerged.  Unfortunately,
the configure script finds the installed esd and then fails.  When
somebody has spare time the ebuild needs to be rebuilt to disable
esd if it isn't in USE.
