I would like to work with you (and any other volunteers) to arrive at some post-install instructions for users to help them get a minimally usable system going. No one should need to reinvent the wheel. Something like the following:

How to setup a new user (boring for most, but most of
		the distros do this automagically)
How to set make and use variables (and what their
		 significance is)
	Very brief instructions for portage
Maybe something about the init structure and other topics
(the Gentoo way of doing things)
	XFree
XFCE (or another simple window manager)
sylpheed (the best choice for mail, since it's so simple)
Netscape (a browser would be nice)
Sound card (at least a few common types)
Printer support (cups and related items probably)
For many users, dialup support (I use cable, so I will be of
		limited help here).
Perhaps some suggestions for upgrading to keep current

As soon as I get up to speed with _rc5, I could prepare the XML documents, or I could drop back to _rc4 where I have that merged).

Your comments, please.

I'm very interested in having you help with setup documentation. We already
have a Desktop Guide that covers a lot of things (see the Web site) created by
Grant Goodyear, but he's going to be relocating and becoming an Assistant
Professor, so I'm sure he's going to be quite busy and could probably use some
assistance. Grant?

Best Regards,

I like the looks of this. I will plagiarize some of it and come up with what I think should be in a Minimal Desktop.

I would absolutely like to have assistance, since I do expect
to be horribly overworked fairly soon.

Never fear. I'm working on a companion piece that will cover some things
Grant did not touch and provide an into to an XFCE based desktop which is
what I used for daily work. One request. I sent earlier mail
complaining: we really need version/date to appear on every document. I
put a temporary fix in the copy of guide-main.xsl I'm working from to add
version/date right after the Editor line, but you may prefer another
location.
