Is it possible to make a package from the information in /var/db/pkg ? I
don't want to have to recompile the whole thing just to make a package of
what I already have available =) Just a thought... I hope this is (or
becomes) a planned feature.

Well, even if we hacked our md5 digests to work in /var/db/pkg, it would only
work for packages that don't reference anything in ${FILESDIR}. Quite a few
use auxilliary files and patches, and these things aren't available in
/var/db/pkg. So it wouldn't really work.

Why would it matter if they had patches? Do they make it into binary
packages? I am not familiar with gentoo binary packages, I just assumed
they just had the bins and the package info that would go into
/var/db/pkg...

<whine> i don't wanna rebuild X just to make a package out of it </whine>
=)

Well, then you can "emerge --buildpkg xfree-4.1.0.ebuild"; emerge will build
packages as it merges, which should be what you want. :)

Best Regards,

but i already built it! All the files and information about the files that
were built/installed is there... why can't I make a package from it? I, for
one, think it would be a useful feature.

anyway, is there more to a gentoo tbz2 binary package than just the files
and the info that would go in /var/db/pkg? I did a quick check of the
portage user guide and the faq and found no mention of it.
