Okay, one comment.  Could we please standardize on a naming convention.
It's like we translate everything to lowercase for the directory names
with the notable exceptions of the contents of x11-wm/ and one or two
other directories.

Yeah, it's silly and it's small potatoes.  But I think that there is
something to be said for the hobgoblin of this small mind and having
some consistency.

Daniel, maybe you could make portage print out a simple warning
message if the package name contains any uppercase characters? That
way people new to gentoo that make new packages will know the names
should be en all-lowercase.

tackling it by the beginning of next week.  And I'll make sure I give a

The only package that really needs care is ORBit. About 50 packages are
in dev-perl.
I personaly thought that using the sources name as we did it till now
makes more sense since it reduces the typing in the scripts. 
But if you guys are not happy with that change it.

Yes, the reason why we have uppercase is because the original archive name /
source directory also has uppercase.  This means that all the defaults get set
up correctly.  For this reason alone, I think we should allow uppercase
characters in /usr/portage.

Exceptions:
	If we are using uppercase for a package name, and the corresponding archive
	or source directory doesn't use uppercase characters, then this should be 
	fixed so that we're using lowercase.

This helps me to understand why MacOS X added case insensitive file comparison
routines.  Ideally, I'd like the filesystem to preserve the original case but
have:

# cat foo

and

# cat Foo

and

# cat fOo

...cat the same file.

After all, "D" and "d" are both a "d".  I'll see if I can track down a really
interesting message about this that I can forward to the list.

The old MacOS fs was case insensitive, that's why these routines are in
MacOS/X

Well, what about having the directories be lowercase (since those names
don't affect the portage) and then have only mixed-case ebuilds?

No, I have no idea why I'm even asking about this other than the fact
that most people's pinkys are too lazy to hit the shift key.  8)

How about that compromise. We use lowercases for all categories beside
dev-perl. This whould mean we change three or four package names and
makes
our categories look nicer.
For perl modules we continue using case sensitive names because the
majority of packages uses upper-cases and it reduces typing.

?? Using case-sensitivity for SRC_URI and case-insensitivity for
dependencies?

Well I think in this case you must write an case insensitive bash
parser.

Mac OS's fs allows other things like storing multiple files under the
same 
name. I read an article about the MacOS X development and problems the
developers had with the port. Unfortunately I don't find it.

Actually, move it out of bash and into python.  Becomes simple.  Or have
bash call a perl one-liner or sed script to parse everything via
tolower()....

Hmm...  Something to consider here.  I was thinking that user
expectations are for things to be consistent.  You know, we could always
try and modify the portage code to ignore case.

Sorry, it's still sitting on my machine waiting for some more tests.
I'm one of those people who hates committing anything to a tree before

Well that doesn't work for me because I'm testing packages during
development on different machines with different ARCH,OPT and USE flags.
But I only change current-packages if I'm sure the package is stable.

I don't think you must change you behaviour just because they are not
like mine. I just want to use the latest version of the gcc package for
further
development. I'm not planning to use the pgcc option because I have not
tested glibc-2.2.2/binutils-2.10.92.0.2 and I want to avoild side
effects.

Sorry if I sounded a bit rough, I normaly have worked a full day if you
guys wake up in US.
