There are special instructions (/usr/src/linux/Documentation/networking/8139too.txt) on how to enable it. It's strange that it isn't enabled by default, since there's no other rtl8139 driver in the kernel. Do me a favor; email Jeff and let him know that the driver works well for you and ask him about why it's not enabled in the kernel by default, since there appears to be no other rtl8139 driver available. In the meantime, I'll patch our most recent kernel ebuilds to enable it automatically. Let me know what he says.
