The web site doesn't specify how to install the tbz2 packages after the initial install of Gentoo. The only instructions are to copy the packages you want to /mnt/gentoo/tmp before reboot. What is the 'proper' way to do package installs? When you copy the files to the tmp dir should you copy the directories structure also or can you just copy the tbz2 files to a dir you create in tmp?

You can just move over the packages you want to install. The correct way to
install them is to type:
# pkgmerge package.tbz2

I need to find someone who can maintain and improve upon our existing
documentation; I can't do everything :)
Any takers?

OK, I'll get you going on CVS sometime today (I'll email you privately).
Yes, part of the deal is that you get to ask lots of questions :)
Do you think you can take care of all the documentation yourself with
no problem, or would you prefer it if I find one or two more people
who will also contribute?

I'll give it my best shot - can do the web site too if you like,
although there will be the odd pause whilst I concentrate on assignments
so it might be a good idea to have a backup person too ;)

We may want to put together a web team. What kinds of things are you best at?
Do you do web design or focus more on coding dynamic content with php?
Even though the website isn't that amazing just yet, I'm very protective of it
because I created all the graphics (including all the logos) and the HTML from
scratch, as well as the python script that parses our Changelog and creates the
little development update on the right hand side.
What I probably should do is create a list of all the jobs that need to get
done, and then post it to the list. If anyone has any ideas of things that
you'd like us to have on the web site, feel free offer suggestions.

A list of newly-found security holes as and when they are found would be
nice, although I imagine that will take a while...

Application design. Dynamic content coming from MySQL. My graphics design skills are minimal (ie. I can use Gimp to create a logo but don't ask me to picture a new look for a site :-)

Hi there,
I'm just following these discussions since I'm really a newbie to linux.
However, I've got some questions you may be able to answer:
1. Checking what packages you need
Is there a way to determine the dependency status of the whole system (check
what packages are missing). I know there's an ebuild command to check the
dependency of a single package. So do I have to write a shell script which
goes through the db and checks every single package in there?
2. (Actually not Gentoo related) Organizing data.
Comparing Linux to Windows I realized the differences in managing data. Eg.
linux (and unix?) uses a "spread out" system collecting data of the same
type (like libraries, binaries, documentation) whereas Windows puts data
together (each program has its own directory). Is there a proper technical
term which describes these two models?
regards
Jo
I'd gladly help you out with the website. Though I'm not really working with
linux.
Yet, I'm just a Windows, Outlook and Photoshop lamer ;)

Try:
# portage-maintain
It'll inform you of any critical packages that aren't installed, as well as
when you have a package installed and there's a newer (recommended) version
available.

I guess the generic term is "filesystem organization". Linux is moving towards
using a standard called FHS; however, most of the standards come from successful
traditions of past UNIX operating systems.

Well, if you're a newbie, then you should be spending your time learning your
way around Linux :)) When you're comfortable with Linux, then we'll have some
ways you can help.

Well, depending on what server is used, I can certainly help. I am a
rather fluent Zope/Python Developer.
Mebbe I'll prototype a site just for fun and example. :^)=
Yes, once I get Gentoo installed (waiting on hardware issue resoultion),
I will be looking to provide some Zope packages.
Documentation-wise, I use LyX a _lot_, as it makes writing documentation
(which I also do a lot of) much easier (mmm revision control...)
Just my 7.4 cents,

As I mentioned, I do a fairly significant amount of this, so i can help
with this.
I prefer using lyx, since I can then output to postscript, pdf, ascii,
html, etc.
