It's is not the first time I've seen the misidentification made, and I
wish that people at least on this mailing list would avoid it.

Trolling means deliberately derailing the discussion and wasting
everyone's time by writing messages that "press people's buttons" and
therefore are likely elicit angry, poorly thought out responses from the
list readership.

Joking, by contrast, is not designed to elicit much response beyond a
":)" or two. Instead, it is designed to make the reader chuckle - and,
perhaps, think (since humor can be a good way to slip an idea past a
jaded reader's mental defenses).
