Hello!
Tomcat 5.5 is out since a year now and still didn't make it into portage.
It doesn't even depend on JDK 1.5.0 in a sense that there is a compat
tarball which makes it work with JDK 1.4 so why isn't there a tomcat-5.5
ebuild in portage? Is there some reason for this?
Regards,
Szabolcs

Interesting question :). I'm search ebuild for tomcat 5.5 in
bugs.gentoo.org. It exist and last actvity dated at 2/005-08-06.
I'm added resin ebuild (for version 3.0.14) at //2005-08-25. But this
still in bugs.gentoo.org. Java related projects slowly added and modifed :)

Most likely because no one has added it, why do you ask?

The java herd is heavily understaffed. You can find an ebuild in our
experimental tree in:
http://gentooexperimental.org/svn/java/gentoo-java-experimental/

So how does one get involved? I'm a professional Java developer and a gentoo
enthusiast. I'd love to participate and it would seem my skills would be a
good fit here, especially since you have the need...

Use the following resources:
Developer handbook:
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/devrel/handbook/handbook.xml
Java bug list:
http://tinyurl.com/n9qb
Experimental java tree:
http://gentooexperimental.org/svn/java/gentoo-java-experimental/
Project pages (under work):
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/java/
Mailing list:
gentoo-java@lists.gentoo.org
IRC:
#gentoo-java@freenode
Basically pick something you are most interested in. This being a Tomcat
5.5 thread, you could start by testing the state of 5.5 in experimental.
I think I need to port some fixes from official to the official tree,
but of course that is something you can start with. Just contact me with
svn diffs and I can get them committed to the experimental tree. You can
always contact me for more information.

That's what I've been getting for a couple of days:
svn: PROPFIND request failed on '/svn/java/gentoo-java-experimental'
svn: PROPFIND of '/svn/java/gentoo-java-experimental': SSL negotiation failed: SSL error: unknown protocol (https://gentooexperimental.org)
Hmmmm?

Yes, the gentooexperimental apache setup was broken a while ago. axxo
has more details. For now just plain http is working. Hopefully bonsai
will get it fixed.
