Hi,

I created a script that checks all metadata.xml herd tags against the
official herd list (gentoo/misc/herds.xml) which is kept in CVS. The
list of metadata.xml files that specify a non-existent herd can be found
at:

http://dev.gentoo.org/~swegener/packages-with-non-existent-herd

If you find a package on that list, that belongs to one of your herds or
to a category you maintain, please fix the metadata.xml. Either by
correcting the metadata.xml or by getting in contact with the Gentoo
Metastructue Project to set up a herd.

Cheers,
Sven

Actually you can just register your herd in the gentoo cvs module
(/misc/herds.xml). All current herds are also in that file and biweekly
copied to http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/metastructure/herds/herds.xml .

Please however do not set up a herd for a single package. The packages in
a herd should have some kind of similarity. Also do not give packages to
a herd you are not a member of without consulting that herd.

Paul

For the record, there is a single dev-perl ebuild in the list. As soon
as the individual that added the package will take responsiblity for it,
we'd be much obliged.

My name was already listed as the maintainer in the metadata, but I've
moved it to the crypto herd now that it exists, as a more suitable home.

And here's output from a script[1] that checks which packages need
metadata.xml files:

Speaking of which... in
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/metastructure/herds/herds.xml#doc_chap52 -
why does Cardoe and I show up only by email? and at the top of the list?
That's not how the entries in gentoo/misc/herds.xml looks...

Well, you need to ask devrel to add your names
to /proj/en/devrel/roll-call/userinfo.xml

You als might want to have a look at my eshowmaintainer I use for
bug-wrangling. It uses herds.xml to display herd email and maintainers
of the herd. You might need to adjust the location of the herds.xml.

You can call it with one or several packages on command line or call it
without arguments to start it in interactive mode.

Output looks like:

sven@luna ~ $ eshowmaintainer
> baselayout

sys-apps/baselayout
        Maintainer: azarah@gentoo.org
        Maintainer: agriffis@gentoo.org
        Herd: base-system
                eMail: base-system@gentoo.org
                Maintainer: azarah@gentoo.org
                Maintainer: agriffis@gentoo.org
                Maintainer: avenj@gentoo.org
                Maintainer: drobbins@gentoo.org
                Maintainer: gmsoft@gentoo.org
                Maintainer: kumba@gentoo.org
                Maintainer: lu_zero@gentoo.org

thanks it does indeed look handy. I'm reinstalling dev-libs/libxml2 with
python support now.

Adding the <longdescription> field </longdescription> when one exists to
that might be nice addition to it's display.

We still have some packages that have an invalid herd. The largest
number of packages have

- xemacs (We already have the emacs herd, don't know if that fits)
- media-gfx (Best fit might be the graphics herd)
- kde-themes (Bet fit might be the kde-other herd)

as herd. Could the developers that commited these packages or maintain
the herd fix this please.

It does fit -- they're two different herds, two different teams
(mkennedy for emacs, rac for xemacs).
