Hello, I would like to apply as a student in the Google Summer of Code
program. I would like to work on creating a simple method to install Gentoo
on an EeePC. This will involve creating scripts and code that will
preconfigure the Gentoo instalation to be optimized for the EeePC, and to
contain all of the appropriate modules and configurations to enable all
hardware on the EeePC.
I own an EeePC 900 with which I wil be abe to test. I am uncertain if this
or something similar has been done before, or if this is an appropriate
Google SOC project. Please give feedback or questions, thankyou.

In a similar strain, I'd suggest looking at the stage-builder SoC
proposal by solar. The EeePC would probably be just throwing a tarball
of configuration files over the top of it.

wouldn't one problem with this be that different EeePC's have
different hardware? I believe, that your's has an atom processor while
older models have a celeron.

being that I'm not a gentoo dev, and although I think the project is
worthwhile, I personally don't see that it's a gsoc worthwhile, esp
since gentoo doesn't really do it for anything else. tbh, would this
take more than a week to do? I'm not overtly familliar with the EeePC
but it doesn't seem that unless you were highly un-gentoo-ing it that
this would be a long process, given that I believe the architecture is
all x86.. (maybe x86_64?)

This problem would add complexity which I would tackle. I would like to
either detect which model the user has or ask the user. The larger issue
would be testing on different models. And also, you are incorrect, the 900
has a celeron and the 901 has an Atom.

I do think it would take more than a week, but I agree it would not likely
take three months. Any suggestions regarding how this could be expanded to
take more time?

Yes, the architecture is x86.

Yes, That would be a good idea. I could add to the graphical install instead
of trying to make a completely separate cd. I supose that would even be
preferred.

Regardless of how it's delivered, the end product is the same.
+ A base stage
+ a set of packages
+ EeePC specific configuration

There's nothing specific to the EeePC in the installer itself (unless
you count some config that does the same as above).

The installer was declared deprecated and unsupported in future
releases. It will no longer be used. Here's the original announcement
from back in January:

The difference would be that that proposition is web-based. I propose either
a locally built or pre-built installer.

Incidentally, I was thinking the same thing.

I'm a bit late on this but,

by experience (I did it for work a few months ago), creating an eeepc
specific gentoo chroot/squashfs is no more than 3 days worth of work
with a dual p4 @3ghz (1 week if you're not so familiar with gentoo
maybe) so I don't see anything challenging here. Working on enhancing
stage builder or stage4 generation (or whatever you name it) would be
more interesting for the project as a whole and require much more time
which would probably satisfy GSoC objectives.
