A google search led to a old gentoo post about kde 2.1.1 which says that
the /usr/bin/startkde line that says:
LD_BIND_NOW=true kdeinit +kcminit +knotify
should be changed to:
kdeinit +kcminit +knotify
...this worked like a charm.
I installed from sources rc6-r11, so I dont know why the startkde was not
modified properly...and I dont know why more people didnt have this
problem....but if you do, that seems to be the fix.
