I am looking at building a box this weekend. I want to use 2005.1 and if possible the packages cd (for a quick result) .

I have an athlon 1133. I am re-building it after a root account
compromise (don't ask or I'll cry).

According to the release announcement the package cd's don't seem to
have an athlon version any more. http://www.gentoo.org/news/20050808-annoncement-release-2005.1.xml
(the choices seem to be alpha amd64 ppc (32 bit) ppc (64 bit) sparc64
x86).

However on http://tracker.netdomination.org/ there are package cd's for
a whole lot of other sub-arches - i686, athlon-xp, P3, P4 and more. Are these official gentoo - if not can anyone tell me about their origin and reliability?

Also is "athlon-xp" compatible with "athlon"? Or should I go for i686?

Actually using i686 could be a bonus as it would mean I could share
binaries between my desktop and my p3 laptop, which is compiled for 686.

Only the base arches get distributed on the mirrors due to space
constraints.

They were built by the Release Engineering team using the exact same
specifications as the rest of the media. Currently, these are only
available from the Friends of Gentoo e.V. tracker. We hope to have them
available from the store shortly. Unfortunately, we just don't have the
resources on our community mirrors for hosting them.

No. You need i686. Athlon XP added SSE instructions to the Athlon.

Sounds like a plan.

Thanks for the clarification Chris.

On a semi-related matter I was looking for the catalyst .spec files, and
see a thread pointing at cvs, however I believe that as a non-dev mortal I
can't get access to gentoo cvs. Is that so? If it is then how does one get
the spec files? The old catalyst howto seems to have disappeared too.

These are accessable at
http://www.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/src/releng/?root=gentoo

ViewCVS, available from www.gentoo.org, though the spec files from
2005.0 work perfectly fine.

> the spec files? The old catalyst howto seems to have disappeared too.

It hadn't been updated since before catalyst 1.1.9 (or earlier) so it
wasn't in any usable state. In fact, it being available caused more
bugs and questions than it answered, so I removed it until such time as
we can find someone to completely re-write it from scratch.

Also, this should probably go to gentoo-catalyst mailing list now... ;]
