Hi,
The net-wireless/linux-wlan-ng package, a driver for Prism2/2.5/3 based
IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN cards, is scheduled for package.mask due to
the following reasons:
* The package is currently unmaintained
* There are 9 open bugs for it
* The same functionality is provided by net-wireless/hostap-driver
and/or net-wireless/orinoco-cvs (the latter especially for USB adapters)
* The upstream author recommends using other drivers if possible
* The package hasn't seen a stable release since 2003-03-04, where
version 0.2.0 was released.
* The last 0.2.1 pre-release was almost 6 months ago
* The driver doesn't work with net-wireless/wireless-tools, but provides
it's own, unique configuration tool
* It doesn't integrate with existing Gentoo networking scripts
If you would like to take over maintaining this package and fixing the
above mentioned quirks, please speak up - else it will be package.masked
in a week from now.
If you have an (USB?) adapter, which works with linux-wlan-ng, but not
with orinoco-cvs, I would like to hear about that too.
Sincerely,
Brix

There is not an orinoco-cvs ebuild that is marked stable, plus it is a
live CVS ebuild, making it pretty unusable for a release. Is there a
plan for this?

The current plan is to wait for a portage version, which supports a
naming scheme similar to net-wireless/orinoco-0.15_rc2_p20050708 in
order to add a snapshot of the live net-wireless/orinoco-cvs ebuild to
net-wireless/orinoco.
If you can come up with a naming scheme, apart from -rX bumping, that
will allow us to add a CVS snapshot to net-wireless/orinoco, please do.
I've asked this on this mailing list before, I know :)
Sincerely,
Brix

Well, there's always changing orinoco-cvs from a "live" CVS ebuild to a
snapshot-based CVS ebuild. That would make it orinoco-cvs-20050708.
Then, when a new upstream tarball is released, it gets added to orinoco
with the proper version number.

I know. I just thought that maybe someone had given you a solution.

thats because a solution doesnt exist for what you want exactly ... portage
doesnt allow you to combine suffixes, so no _rc_p ...

I have a Flybook with a Prism 3 usb adapter and I have been succesfully
using linux-wlang-ng with it. Following your suggestion I tried
orinoco-cvs and this is what dmesg gives me:
usbcore: registered new driver prism_usb
usb 2-3: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 7
prism_usb_hard_reset - dummy
prism_usb_init - dummy
prism_usb_init - dummy
prism_usb_allocate - dummy
prism_usb_read_ltv - dummy
eth1: Cannot read hardware identity: error -95
eth1: Incompatible firmware, aborting
prism_usb: Cannot register network device
prism_usb: probe of 2-3:1.0 failed with error -95
I know linux-wlan-ng has its problems but it might still be the only
working driver for some people with usb devices. I am willing to take
maintership if they one day accept me as a dev. I am currently in
mentoring with the java herd. You can contact me as betelgeuse@freenode.
