Hi,

We're considering dropping media-gfx/bootsplash from portage. bootsplash (the
kernel patch which gives you pretty background images on your framebuffer
console) has an ugly design, and hasn't been developed for a while, but was
kept up-to-date with new kernel releases, until 1 year ago.

spock develops fbsplash, which is a much nicer implementation of the same
concept, and actually works on kernels released within the last year :)
http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/gensplash/

This would also involve removing media-gfx/bootsplash-themes-livecd (newer
fbsplash livecd themes are kept in media-gfx/splash-themes-livecd), and we'd
probably rename bootsplash-themes to splash-themes (bootsplash-themes works
with both bootsplash and fbsplash, so no need to drop it).

Any comments?

Daniel

does fbsplash work for all the same kernels bootsplash does ? if so i dont
see why punting it would be a problem ...

bootsplash works up to (and including) 2.6.8.1.

The earliest patches in the fbsplash archive are against 2.6.8.1.
So, we would be dropping support for those earlier kernels, but we don't
really support kernels of such age anyway.

It's also worth mentioning that fbsplash is included in gentoo-sources.

Don't think it works for 2.4 ...

i was wondering more about whether 2.4 is supported ?

Looking to the bootsplash kernel diffs[1] it would appear that we have
several 2.4.x kernels that could still have this patch applied. The
exact versions are not there, but they could have been ported. Is this
patch in any of the 2.4.x patchsets currently sitting in the tree? If
not, there's no reason to keep the bootsplash packages since we don't
have the kernel support in the first place.

Well, we still have users that use bootsplash on 2.4 kernels when using
catalyst, so I would probably not want to see this removed from the tree
just yet. So long as we are still providing 2.4 kernels with bootsplash
patches, we should keep the userland tools in portage.

I don't have a problem with us dropping
media-gfx/bootsplash-themes-livecd, however, since they were just the
themes used on the releases, and I'm sure nobody wants those old things
anymore... ;]

If you do drop it, let me know so I can drop the actual themes from my
dev space, too.

Ok, we'll leave it in for now.
