Ok, I've just put the latest OpenLDAP 2.2.26 into the tree, and I don't
see anything that is now holding back the 2.2 series from ~arch. In 2
weeks, I plan to move it to ~arch, from it's present p.mask status.

It shouldn't cause any problems for anybody that has OpenLDAP installed
as a client only, but it's a bit bumpy for those that are running
OpenLDAP servers.

The ebuild will exit if it detects the server data files from the
previous versions of OpenLDAP, and display instructions on how to
upgrade safely. Bypass them at your own peril, as you will end up with a
badly corrupted database.

Also note that the slapd.conf syntax has had some minor but annoying
changes that will block slapd from starting until they are updated.

Thanks for the note.

My personal opinion is that this sort of news item is the sort of thing
that we need to do a better job of announcing widely. I'm going to CC
the GWN folks on this e-mail as well as our PR folks, to see if either
of those groups want it.

I know this might not be the most popular thing, but shouldn't we also
post this stuff on the front page (or at *least* a sub-page) of www.g.o?

I think that anything that is potentially compatibility or functionality
breaking with a package upgrade *really* needs as much exposure as
possible, to keep the complaints down and to increase the probability of
somebody finding out about the changes before they go in and wreak havoc
on their already-working system.

The PR folks handle the news on www.g.o, I believe (hence my CC to them
as well).

OpenLDAP-2.2 is now ~arch.

Before this package goes stable, I'd like to suggest that backwardly
compatible libraries be provided so that applications aren't horribly
broken by this upgrade (similar to how we've done for openssl in the past).

On two different test systems, this upgrade caused broken dynamic library
dependencies in over 35 packages on each system. I'm going to hazard a
guess that a majority of systems that have openldap installed have more
than one or two packages depending on openldap (and probably aren't
dedicated LDAP servers). For those folks who use LDAP for various thing,
I could see this as being a very big gotcha.

Cheers,

In the tree now, as 2.2.26-r1.

[snip]

This revolves around an upstream bug that has turned up in this upgrade
as well:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93074

The binaries that are linked with both libs do run fine, and seem to
produce correct results.
