For now I've hacked the init.d script to create the required devices at start and to rm them at stop. Not a clean solution, but works for me right now. Every upgrade to vmware, I comment out the changes and try again so far it hasn't worked. I haven't filed a bug since it is vmware and I haven't researched the vmware site yet to see if it should work.
