I am quite interested in converting my gentoo system to UTF-8. I haven't
gone any further than using a UTF-8 locale yet. I am also writing an
ebuild for the Openi18n input method framework
http://www.openi18n.org/subgroups/im/IIIMF/

I am particularly interested in input methods, fonts and getting Chinese
going under UTF-8.

Hi,
It will be interesting to see this happen. Does this happen at the
xfree layer of things or does this happen at the kde level of things??
I'm interested to help out with this.

Ciao

Have you submitted a bug for your ebuild? Because I couldn' find one
in bugs.gentoo.org, I've just filed my version (actually this is a
kind of collaboration at GentooJP) of it at

	http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28272

I'd like to have some comments about im-sdk stuff in general and
Chinese input methods on IIIMF (Japanese input methods via IIIMF work
fine for me).

regards,

Replying to you both here :
No, this is something that must happen on all layers. I'm not sure on
how to actually go by it really. For one thing I guess we'll need a
complete font set, unless we'll just get odd squares in the text; -)
other things remain to be seen is how terminals work and handle it, as
well as translations and input.

The reason I brought it up here is that I feel a bit out of my league,
but its something that I'd want to learn more about, and poke some more
in, so those here with experience on getting things to work, can you
recommend things please?
