Actually, i installed manually vera fonts on my system (4.3.0-r2) and
copied as instructed the local.conf from the package to /etc/fonts, ran
fc-cache and it worked.
It has got nothing to do with xftconfig which is my second point, xft
package is *incompatible* with xfree 4.3.0-r2 (as mentionned in the
ebuild) and if you upgraded from 4.2.1 (as i did), it doesn't uninstall
it (tried that on 2 gentoo 1.4rc3 from 4.2.1 to 4.3.0-r2) and i had to :
emerge unmerge xft (which contains xft-config)
