It is a bug, the devs know about it. They are in the process of fixing it. In the mean time you can get a patch from here http://gentoo.twobit.net/portage/portage.py-lordvan5.diff that you can apply against /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py Once applied you may have to remove /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py{c,o} Please be patient. If this patch breaks your portage there should be a rescue copy in /usr/portage/sys-apps/portage/files.
