Is this to do with hinting? edited ebuild, adding src_unpack() section from 2.0.9 ebuild emerge freetype restart mozilla Also fiddled with my subpixel decimation settings, looks better now. start gimp (1.3) Seems to work OK. Can use the type tool without problems. start gnumeric (1.1.5) Seems to work OK. This only really tests the widgets though, since the gnumeric canvas dosn't use antialiasing. start mrproject Crashes. Find out that I'm running an older version, so... emerge -c dev-libs/libmrproject emerge -c app-office/mrproject Seems to work OK. Log out and log back in again. Seems OK. This should test the panel and WM (metacity). They both seem OK, although I'm not sure which FT they are using since the xfree build includes it's own version. Actually, the font rendering with FT212 looks better to my eyes that that of FT209. And the apps I've tried seem to work without trouble. I think that's all the major apps I have that use FT.
