I don't like the default behavior of installing the "latest" version but it is flexible (you can specify a specific version). Encap does something that I wanted --- it can ignore certain directories in a package (e.g if a package is "built in place" then encap could be asked to ignore the /src directory). It is also an advantage to have it written in C so that it can used earlier in a system-installation process (perl is no longer in the base install of some systems).
