I'm happy to announce:
Gnome2 beta5 + is now avaiable in portage!
its mostly masked for testing, and you will have to edit your
/usr/portage/package.mask to get it install-able

Just search for "gnome2" and you will find it fairly simply.
there's a lot of packages there for you, just add a # in front of them,
then proceed.

emerge gnome will then emerge Gnome2 desktop beta5, but it will not
emerge every application that is ported to gnome2.
(some programs avaiable are: ggv, mrproject, gimp, gnumeric )

Yes, its possible to get AA text in Gnome2
export GDK_USE_XFT=1
then startx and you will have it.

to launch Gnome 2 just set you XSESSION to "gnome" and there you are.

This will replace your normal Gnome Desktop, but will leave all Gnome
applications in working order.

If you want your old panel run : "panel"
for the old Gnome Control Center run : "gnomecc"

In following of the Sun and Gnome predictate, the default installed
WindowManager is "Metacity". Sawfish is also avaiable as a snapshot, or
with your old version.

please, report all crashes with bugzilla to the Gnome release team.

report all package inconsistencies to me, Spider@gentoo.org

happy testing,

   Spider

Good work! I installed Gnome2 through portage and then uninstalled it all... Bad idea, hosed a lot of things. Mostly icons and the like, but still, everything was funny for awhile.

Fixed now,

Yes, Since gnome2 packages contain a lot of icons, they overwrite the
gnome1 icons (mostly they are the same files and shouldn't be any
problems) except when You uninstall Gnome2, then it pulls the updated
icons out along with it and you are left without icons, not always fun.
Same goes for some of the program settings (.schemas) from gnome-games

This could probably be fixed by qpkg or other package management tool
that lists packages with missing files and simply re-emerge those.

My upgrade from 1.4 went fine except gtk (2.0r4 didn't work, r5 solved
the problem) and eel, which didn't compile, because gail wasn't in the
dependancys (which also seems to be resolved now, if I interpret the cvs
log right).

Good Work! At the moment I am staring at nautilus not believing how much
faster it is than in version 1.4 of gnome :-)

thanks
suka

P.S.: Am I right to assume that if I want to enable AA text all the time
I just have to put a textfile in /etc/env.d ? And does this need to have
a certain name?

I just put this in my .bashrc (loaded from bash_profile)

GDK_USE_XFT=1
export GDK_USE_XFT

And there it is :)

Just wanted to point out, that according to the Gnome 2 release team
meeting this is not true anymore:

"* Window managers

Sawfish is the window manager on the GNOME 2 modules list on dotplan.
Metacity is not on that list. It's likely that metacity will appear
with/for GNOME 2 as a preview release, for those people who want to play
with it, but Sawfish is the official one for GNOME 2.0.0."

yes, I know that fairly well, I also know that there were some bad
inconsistencies with rep-gtk and gnome enabled gtk+, and that the last
sawfish snapshot released was completely unbuildable, thats why I set
Metacity as the default windowmanager when you installed "gnome" as-is.

Hope this clarifies my decision to make MEtacity the default
windowmanager in gnome(2) for the moment, when the final is released and
there is a working Sawfish (which I quite doubt. sawfish won't be in
time) That will change.
