Okay... so I'm not the only one this is happening to. I'm trying to get 1.1a
up and running on a 128meg Duron 700 and a 96meg K6-2 400 both with the same
results you report.

Subject: [gentoo-dev] Gentoo 1.1a problems

i've had the 1.0 prerelease working for several
months and decided to do a fresh install of the
newest 1.1a.

1) there's no longer the new colorful prompt just
after chrooting in, doing the env-update, and sourcing
/etc/profile

2) portage has major difficulty during a compile of
binutils-2.11.92.0.12.3.tar.bz2 each time i've tried
to run the bootstrap.sh script, the compile stops at
random (generally in the middle of a autoconf/make? step
where it checks this or that, etc.).
i've tried this about 4 times varying compiler
options and .isos (1.0, 1.1, 1.1a). where it stops is
different each time. when i control-c, it says that
portage is being killed by SIGINIT; exiting, then it
just hangs, i.e. it isn't killed.

any ideas as to how i can get a new system up and running?
is this a portage problem or a binutils problem???

I can solve this one: after the changeroot $SHELL is set to /bin/sh
(although using chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash !) -> /etc/profile checks
for $SHELL to be /bin/bash
-> solution: use

export SHELL="/bin/bash"

before the source /etc/profile .

I don't know about the compile error though... I have a bootstrap running
which I hope to find completed when I return to work tomorrow...

regards
tigor
