Hi there,
After I installed LFS awhile back, I wanted to try out gentoo, and so I did
The basic install worked great!
After that, I tried emerge x11-wm/WindowMaker because I wanted Xwindows and
WindoMaker and then it started
Lockups while d/l X420src-1.tgz. I wasn't able to login through another
console nor ^C the operation so I had to do a cold reboot
Tried again, part -2 and -3 d/l oke but now de install failed the checksum
of the -1 file. So I removed it and did emerge x11-wm/WindowMaker again.
Lockup while d/l. Now I was getting annoyed so I did ftp ftp.xfree86.org and d/l
the source myself and put it in /usr/src/port*/dist*/
Again I did emerge x11-wm/WindowMaker and now it passed the checksums. i was
happy until...
Again that -1 file! Now it lockup my system while it was u npacking the
file!
So I have 2 questions for you: 1) how do I succesfully install X11 and
WindMaker on my gentoo system and 2) can you program emerge in such a way that it
doens't lock up the entire system when there is a problem during the install?
I'm having M$ flashbacks here!
Anyway, this email isn't meant as a flame, the Gentoo project looks great
but at the moment I have just these two annoying problems :)
I hope you can help me out here
Sincerely,
Ruud

I would check your hardware/configuration. I've successfully merged X11
several times over the last few weeks on different machines without a
hitch and I'm new to Gentoo as well.

I see two possibilities for the problem here:
- your harddisk is full and it locks on that (it shouldn't crash on it
though)
- Some other piece of hardware is broken (processor or memory)
This behaviour should never turn up in a normal functioning system. If I
needed to guess, your processor is overheating, and it is triggered by
the decompression.
Good luck with it,
Paul

Hi Gentoo Developers !
First of all : You did a great job !!!
I installed my system with a bootable 1.0_rc6 image ....and all worked
perfectly ;)
The only problem I encountered so far was:
* How to change to the mirror server !?!? (The one in france ...as this
would be much faster for europe )
* But the most important thing: since the last 3 days no emerge did work
!!!!???
(I had an active working connection , but got the message like:
www.ibiblio.org:80...blablabla : no route to host...
I could ping the machine I could read the websites ...no problem ....
=> Did you change some directory structues ????
Please help me !
THX in advance ;)
Yours,
Michael Karas
