Hi,
I'm getting the exact same error from a build-ix86-1.0_rc6-r14.iso
downloaded on 12-22. I think it's building sysvinit but the screen goes
by too fast for me to tell. Did you add any USE flags? The one I added
don't seem related to the crypt library.

I think it is related to the new baselayout. It includes
sysvinit, and sulogin links against libcrypt. If im not
mistaken glibc includes libcrypt, so either we need to change
the order in which things build at bootstrap, or the build
image needs to include libcrypt.a/libcrypt.so.1 .

Quick fix.
Just copy "/usr/lib/libcrypt.a" from an existing system to your
"/mnt/gentoo/usr/lib". Everythings work fine...
Note: you can use wget to fetch...I you haven't got an existing system then
I'll put this file on my ftp so you can fetch it like:
"wget ftp://mars.prosoft.com.tr/libcrypt.a"

Yes, this is it. I just made minor tweaks to baselayout and
bootstrap.sh to (hopefully) eliminate the problem. It really
should work now; emerge rsync and give it a shot.
Sorry about that,
