Hi All,

glibc-2.2.4-r6 has been fixed and should now work seamlessly for everyone.
The problem was that I removed some special pre/postinst steps right before
committing because I thought they wouldn't be necessary with the new
Portage, but I was wrong. They've been added back and I've just performed
a glibc build/merge in a chroot environment using the latest build image.

It should also be possible to upgrade glibc-2.2.4-r6 when you're doing
lots of other things, like hangin out in X listening to music. However,
while this worked for me last night, it hasn't been extensively tested,
so be careful.

Best Regards,

The ebuild has been confirmed working by me and someone else. You will
not be able to merge the new ebuild until you have a functional system
again, but once you do the new ebuid should work fine. Sorry for the
inconvenience.

Sorry but,
Applying it, I got no change. Same results.

When it makes "make install", I got errors like...

Hey its me, judge. Can you post a glibc binary tarball? My glibc got
messed up after I tried to upgrade it with -r4.

Hi!

Just wanted to give another confirmation that glibc-2.2.4-r6 merges
fine. I tested this on my Gentoo system at work and merged it from a
gnome-terminal with a bunch of other stuff running. Very nice!

Unfortunately, my Gentoo partition on my home box is completely trashed
after trying the same with glibc-2.2.4-r5. (sigh) I'll be spending
this evening putting the pieces back together.

Philosophical question, can something similar to glibc-2.2.4-r6 be done
when merging other libraries, i.e. X, gnome or kde?

tod

Yes, in fact, it should all work now automagically. The problem with glibc
2.2.4-r5 is that I thought it would work automagically with glibc too, but
it still needed some help. All "normal" libraries can now be upgraded in-
place, safely. This is with Portage 1.7.8+.

Hi

Just a question to satisfy my curiosity. How does this work?
Does portage now keep a copy of the old libs? And if so,
isnt things going to get cluttered ?

Thanks

Portage now "mv -f"'s the new files into place, which causes the new
.so file to have a new inode #, preventing crashes.
