Hey,

i want to setup a server as mail-server. What application do you prefer?
Sometimes ago gentoo used d. j. bernsteins tools to manage init-scripts.
Mhh, while they go away it looks like qmail isn't the best solution
anymore. What server do you use? postfix, sendmail or qmail or ???.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Sebastian Werner

I would say this is a very personal opinion and there is no "Gentoo way"
of doing it. I personally prefer postfix because it's simple to set up.

Others prefer qmail for the exact same reason so...

I prefer qmail for the Maildir use, as well as some nice spam tools like
tmda. I personally find it a pain to administer (on my Debian box), but
its very fast and secure. Try a couple, Use what makes you happy.

Well taking as a goal the ultimate "possible" security known today, we
went using qmail, on our 100's production servers ...
now there are some really easy mail servers to use and full of features
too ...
just try some you will find what suits you ! :)

You don't really need supervise to manage qmail. Though, you can always
install net-mail/qmail-sumo and configure daemontools/supervise to your
heart's content.

Though honestly, I still run qmail out of xinetd. The arguments that
were made for tcpserver over inetd were valid years ago. But things
have changed and xinetd addresses many of the "issues" people used to
have with inetd.

As far as best solution goes, it all depends on your needs.

As a point of information, exim/postfix/qmail all support the maildir
format and have it enabled in the default Gentoo configs.

Also, TMDA now supports all three of the aforementioned MTAs.
