Yes, just download the jre.xpi from ftp.netscape.com.  Run mozilla as root
and open that file.  It'll automatically install java2 for you.

same thing !! any java stuff that i run just craches!
balckdown , blackup, straight from java.sun.com or netscape ; it wont
make it !! :) i donno where the h*ll is the problem ! :)

Strange, runs fine here, which version of Mozilla?
I'm using the java-plugin from the dev-lang/jdk-1.3.1 though. You can
merge that one and then make a link:

/usr/lib/mozilla/plugin/javaplugin_oji.so ->
/opt/java/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so

and see if that works better.

trust me i've installed almost every thing that "pretented" to have the
moz/netsc. java plugin ...
moz 0.9.6
still no luck ...
maybe 'cause i have an "old" gentoo having some stale lib somewhere ?!
(glibc, libc ...) it's a rc5 i think ...
i emerged x11-4.1.0 lately just fine ... gnome is a charm and evo is
even sweeter ...

This is really really strange,  if you have the jre installed, does it
work to open one of those crashing pages in the appletviewer?

appletviewer http://.../

so that we can determine if it's mozilla or java that has some problem
at your system.

You can also look to see if Mozilla detects the correct plugin by
writing: 

about:plugins 

in the URI-field in Mozilla, it will list all plugins and where they are
loaded from.

Ok, looks like a Java-problem rather than a problem in Mozilla, I'll
handle this over to karltk who is responsible for Java-related issues in
Gentoo.

Heh, thanks Mikael.

We have had numerous problems with Sun's JVM on Gentoo for some reason. I
have not tried to track down the exact problem yet. 

Until I do, I recommend that you use the Blackdown JVM, which actually
works.


Now, where's our issue tracker ????
