I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, and to be honest I dont know
if the current version solves this problem, but I installed r11 from the
source boot CD (was isolinux at that point, dont know if it has changed) and
I was a bit troubled by the fact that PPP installs were not accounted for.

But, that is the past.....what I want to know is, will the next release (1.0
or otherwise) include ppp support?

I assume ppp support is just something that nobody has gotten around to, but
otherwise, ignoring dial-up users is a gigantic mistake.

I do not quite understand the question, I'm afraid.

We do have ppp ebuilds in the tree, but they might not be on the
installation CD. Installing Gentoo from scratch over PPP has, afaik, not
been throughly tested yet.

Once Gentoo is installed, setting up ppp is fairly easy (just merge ppp
and pppconfig, for instance). I daily check mail using ppp.

Kind regards,

Karl T

Hi

I think what he means, is that he would like pppd, chat, etc on the boot
image, and and ppp support build (maby as modules) into the kernel that
is used to boot the image.

Meaning, he can boot off the cd, modprobe ppp_generic and co, and run
pppd and chat to establish a internet connection, and then do the
bootstrap.

Personally living in a country without cable, etc, i think it is a great
idea.

Greetings

agree - because i'm one of those

i do, since i tried that on my box

right now, you have to manually emerge pppd _before_
bootstrapping - ugly, but works, provided you have
a running system - i had a debian.

then use the --fetch-only feature - takes a long time
be prepared for about 15 hours, regularly checking
whether all went fine

then go ahead as in the docs
i deviated a bit cause i made the system bootable before
bootstrapping - saved me some headaches when
running into dead ends.
(of course this includes the basic configuration as well)

hth
ciao
peter
