Turns out I had both libxml and libxml2 merged. libxml2 is the killer for build nautilus. I have unmerged libxml2 and am compiling nautilus-1.0.5 right now. so far so good. It looks like this is one of those multiple versions of library problems that seems to have everyone scratching their heads lately.
