I have to admit that I tend to think that the simplest method is
to require a single kdelibs and qt.  I realize that recompiling 
all of KDE is painful, but how many people are really going to 
want to upgrade qt w/o upgrading all of KDE as well?

The problem is that you can't just recompile a qt/kde-2 app against qt/kde-3; 
they are not api-compatible.
