hmm i think it should be
  grub> root (hd1,0)
  grub> setup (hd1,0)

since hdb shoudn't be recognized as a harddisk ...
you can try to find the menu file inside of grub .. then you know for sure

can't you configure xosl to boot your linux kernel ?!?
