Hi!
Me and Danamark will in the near future start the work of deprecating
the categories in the subject. Since many more ebuilds in the
gnome-apps and kde-apps will be added in the future it will be total
chaos in those categories with no subcategories. We have decided to
move the packages in there to the correct other categories.
app-*
media-*
net-*
and perhaps some other that I missed.
Danamark will take care of kde-apps and I'll do gnome-*
gnome-libs/gnome-base needs to be cleaned from non-gnome-only
libraries. The libraries that are gnome-only in gnome-libs will be
moved into gnome-base.
gnome-apps/gdm and gnome-apps/nautilus which are both parts of GNOME
will be moved into gnome-base.
This might result in that you might see a package being in two places
at the same time (i.e. when it's been copied to the new location but
not yet removed from the old).
Regards,
Mikael Hallendal

Hi all,
The packages that are part of the base kde distribution (i.e. kdemultimedia)
will be moved to kde-base. All other packages will be moved to the
appropriate categories.
In many cases there's ambiguity as to the reclassification of these packages,
and far too many app-misc candidates. So, this is a list of the relocations
I've decided on so far. I'd appreciate contribution of ideas. Tomorrow I'll
look over the replies and make my decisions.
KDE base distribution packages, move to kde-base:
kdeaddons, kdeadmin, kdegraphics, kdemultimedia, kdenetwork, kdepim, kdesdk,
kdeutils, kdoc.
Note: kdevelop and koffice have their own release schedules, so they aren't
grouped in kde-base.
Please suggest better locations for these if you can, especially for those
that go in *-misc:
cervisia dev-util
kbear net-ftp
kcpuload app-misc
kdbg dev-util
kdevelop dev-util
kfilecoder app-arch
kfilereplace app-text
kgraphspace app-misc
kmago net-misc
knetload net-misc
koffice app-office
krusader app-misc
ktelnet net-misc
ktexmaker2 app-editors
kuickshow media-gfx
kvirc net-irc
quanta app-editors
webconfig app-admin
Eventually we might need new categories, but that's not what I'm about right
now.

Is there an easy way to get NFS server support working?
I emerge'd the nfs-utils package, but it appears that there is more to it
than that.
I've poked around, making sure the nfsd kernel module is loaded, portmap is
running, and the various rpc.* daemons are running, but it is not quite
working.
Is there a Gentoo-oriented NFS howto?
Maybe there could be an nfs-server package which would automatically bring
the service up easily.
Thanks everyone for making a very useable Linux distro which does things the
right way.

The move is getting delayed by a day or two because of drobbins' wish to
design a generic "job system" for portage and make this update its first job.
Details will follow later.
In the meantime, since the contens of kde-apps have been redistributed,
please point any new dependencies at the new locations, even though the old
locations still exist.

Yay! Thank you Dan and Michael.

I'd like to recommend something like the sysutils category from the FreeBSD
ports system. Things like load meters, battery meters, password
generators, and other misc system utility kind of stuff. Some candidates
for this category would be:
kcpuload
knetload
xosview
lhinv
The purpose of this "sys-utils" category would be to store "Applications
related to the management, maintenance, or monitoring of the local system".
Software like cricket and mon do not fall into this category because their
scope extends beyond the local machine.
Also, I was thinking that an app-comms category is in order. Apps stored
in this bin would be:
kermit
minicom
lrzsz
hylafax
viewfax
seyon
Basically this bin would be for "Applications for communication across
analog or serial lines and their support programs".

Aggreed. I'd also like to recommend an x11-misc for stuff that needs X but
don't fit under any other category.

Hello Thomas,

I've just sent a new nfs-utils-0.3.1 package to gentoo-ebuild.
Hopefully it will help you out, since it separates init.d/nfs into two
scripts that work better: init.d/nfs and init.d/nfsmount.

Once you have the new nfs-utils ebuild (you might need to wait a couple
days for this to be available), you need to:
(1) Edit /etc/rc.d/config/basic to say NFSSERVER=yes instead of
NFSSERVER=no.
(2) Edit /etc/exports to export the filesystems you want. Read the
exports man-page for more info.
(3) Start the nfs server by running /sbin/init.d/nfs start
Hope this helps!
Aron

Thanks Aron!
I had given up on hearing from anyone on this request and was just about to
try out the new AFS FAQ... :-)

Haven't tried OpenAFS but the people who do use it say it is totally incredible
and blows NFS out of the water in terms of functionality, scalability and
performance.

Everything is working here now, but I guess I'll have to play with the
OpenAFS stuff too!! :-)
My main motive in getting the file server working was to support "Emptytree
Seedy":
http://emptytreeSeedy.sourceforge.net/
Which, BTW, is VERY cool.
"Emptytree Seedy is a digital audio ripping, encoding and listening system.
It is designed to operate in a multi-host, automatic and batch manner to
simplify the encoding of an entire CD collection. Network operation is fault
tolerant. When a host goes offline any pending encode work will be
transferred to other hosts in the system. When a host comes online it can
dynamically join the system and start ripping and encoding as need be.
Operation can be controlled from any host."
I can put an audio CD in ANY cd-rom drive on my network and it is
automatically ripped to the common file server and all machines immediately
begin mp3 encoding the tracks. Very nice.
Thanks much for the comments and info!
