[gentoo-dev] Create a list of USE flags with descriptions

Hi all,

I think it's high time we created a list of descriptions for our USE flags. 
Short one-line comments are usually enough. We should put it into make.conf.

If there's no reason not to do it, I'll open a public thread on dev-wiki and 
everyone will post info about the USE flags he created. Or we could just use 
the mailing list.

I have created a script that search in all ebuild-files for used USE-flags.
The entries in the default make.conf don't contain all entries which the
developers used!
Sorry, the script is at my home-computer... i will post it to the mailing
list in 8 hours.

I can extend the script to search in a database like textfile:

useflag description
useflag description
useflag...

so that developers just add there the description

That's an issue too. Any USE flag should be referenced in make.conf.

OK, sounds nice. Once the people in the US wake up and join us we should have 
a lively discussion here. This is an issue that keeps being delayed.

Do we really want developers to just add USE-flags by themselfs? I'd
rather see that if a developer needs a new USE-flag he sends an email
to the list requesting that USE-flag (or perhaps directly to Drobbins
or Achim). This way we'll have a more controlled way of adding
USE-flags and the USE-flag and a description can be added where it
should be.

I do however see a really good use for your script and that is being
able to produce a list of which packages uses which USE-flags. This
can be a nice feature for users unsure of what will happend if they
enable a USE-flag.

So, how and where are we going to collect the flag descriptions? There aren't 
that many really, everyone could just post the descriptions to this thread 
(preferrably in groups) and I'll bring it together. I think it can simply go 
in make.conf entirely commented out, and below it the USE="" setting proper. 
Should we keep a list of currently disabled flags as well? What about flag 
classification, and setting of flags as on or off by default? Well, for now 
let's stay with the original idea :-)

Everyone, please focus on updating the
/usr/portage/app-doc/gentoo-web/files/xml/gentoo-howto.xml document so that the
USE table contains up-to-date information.  This is where all the USE-related
information should be collected and explained.  This is the master file for the
Gentoo Development Howto on the gentoo.org Web site.

OK, after we finish working on that we'll still have to copy some info to 
make.conf or somewhere that is accessible from e.g. a build disc.

Hi drobbins,

Some time ago we fixed a problem with execute permissions being set on 
certain ebuilds, we needed your cvs root access to fix that. Well, looking at 
the gentoo-web dir, it suffers from the same problem. If you use mc, make a 
panelled list of all files in the dir and its subdirs and you can see a lot 
of gifs, jogs, htmls etc. with execute permissions.

I think this sounds like a great idea. Not sure whether the commented
USE-flags should be in make.conf or make.globals. I like the second
better becuase comments and often harder to edit.
