I installed kde with emerge kde-base ... which brought in kde-libs and other
stuff.

When I try to run it, it complains that xsetroot and other x... complain that
display = '' and they die without starting the xserver (root or user
environment). Same restults with
	startkde
	  or
	echo kde >.wm
	startx

By the way, in setting up users, I discovered that /etc/skel (not a file but
an empty directory) is borken.

Hmm, that sounds like your xfree installation has problems. It is really
strange that stuff works here and no other user reported such problems.
Try ebuild xfree-4.0.3-r3 clean unmerge merge.

:) It's not broken, we don't have user specific templates for that dir
at the moment. The stuff in that dir
gets copied to the users homedir if you call useradd with the -m option.

bye achim~

done - no change in behavior. Where does the $DISPLAY variable get set on a normal system (required by startkde)?

You can not start kde with running startkde. Use echo kde21 > ~/.wm and
run startx
(startkde does not start X for you)
