[gentoo-dev] gentoo-1.0 rc4 pre2 on cd

I have successfully used my cd containing gentoo-1.0 rc4 pre2 on my computer
with 256Mb RAM and progressed into downloading applications on the net via
portage. When I try to use the same cd on a second computer with 128 Mb RAM
:
#tar xjvf /mnt/distcd/packages/sys.tbz2 -C /mnt/gentoo
the computer completely locks up (at various stages - one at which I think
was almost finished).
So I tried:
#mkdir /mnt/gentoo/windows
#mount -t vfat /dev/hdb7 /mnt/gentoo/windows
#tar xjvf /mnt/gentoo/windows/sys.tbz2 -C /nmt/gentoo
ERROR segmentation fault.
I have also installed the cd drive that wrote the above gentoo cd but no
success.
Any suggestions please?

Hrm; well, we don't support the 1.0_rc4_pre2 release anymore since it includes a
flaky kernel that causes ReiserFS filesystems to become corrupt.  May I ask where
you grabbed it from? (it shouldn't be on ibiblio or any of our mirrors anymore).

You can expect a new release of Gentoo Linux by the end of this week.  I have an
half-complete bootable CD image and Achim is putting tons of work into fixing all
the build problems he can find in our current Portage tree.

Hi Daniel,
I burnt the CD on the 20th February this year and used ext2 which works
fine. I hoped to move my COM+ studies to CORBA programming but once one
starts with linux it is difficult to get back to the original goal! Thank
you for your past help.

If you are gettting random lockups, then you probably have a bad CPU or flaky
memory.  You may want to try the memtest86 memory tester which was included
on our bootdisk as a GRUB boot option.

But *random* lockups definitely point towards a hardware problem.
