XFree86 doesn't compile right with athlon-tbird, keeps bringing up stuff
about PEX, so I just exported FEATURES = "" and it worked fine. It compiles
fine with others' with Athlon-XP.
Athlon-tbird seems to have a problem compiling X, at least on my machine,
but I got it, like I already said.
I haven't seen any other problem except that gcc ncurses thing that I found
the bug, along with others, in #gentoo.

Hi!
Since Gentoo 1.3a has been available for testing for a little while now,
I've
noticed that quite a lot of users installed and tested it, and i've been
swamped by bugreports (to my personal address, the way i like it, at least
for 1.3x issues :o)
Now, i think most of them have been fixed, including the ncurses one (grub
not compiling and such...), and a few xfree ones..
I heard though that Xfree had problems compiling with the 'athlon' flags?
Is that correct?
Now, what this mail is about, i want to get as much info and tips and bugs
into the next one (1.3b), which i'm about to prepare..
So please, speak now, or forever hold your peace :o)
Send it as a reply to this, and not to my personal mail though!
Things already fixed in my current 1.3b trial version:
- ncurses prob (new gcc revision (r6))
- 2 bogus accounts on tarballs
- emerge rsync complaining about /etc/make.profile
- .. more, can't seem to remember them :)
Please, gimme more! :o)
Thanks in advance

If it worked with FEATURES="", then it was probable a sandbox bug..
Since sandbox is disabled by default in 1.3x now, it's no longer a problem..
No need to filter out the flag then out of XFree, right?
Oh, on the sandbox, how's that coming along?
Azarah, i think it was you who had some python test sandbox thingy?
Any input there?

Yeah, already fixed this one with gcc 3.1 r6.
Thanks!

On my 2 systems (one running gcc-3.0.4, slack and one gcc-3.1 gentoo) I
have compiled X with a variety of -march opts and found no b0rkage,
methinks you are good to go on this one.

even without sandbox XFree fails around PEX with -march=athlon -O3 or
march=athlon-tbird
same for -O2
you have to downgrade to -march=i686 -O3 for Xfree build in my system.

make.conf:
CFLAGS="-march=i686 -mmmx -msse -mfpmath=sse -O3 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-march=i686 -mmmx -msse -mfpmath=sse -O3 -pipe"
Works through the bootstrap but fails at emerge system, can't remember on what exactly though. :-/
Small thing I guess..
Other than that I find 1.3a very nice, only problem was changing -march=pentium3 to -march=i686 when compiling lbreakout2 :)
Again, a package problem I guess..
I have a general gentoo problem with my SCSI devices, especially if I try to use SCSI together with IDE, then the system hangs completely so I removed all my IDE devices and now after changing network card (my old network card would give me SCSI errors when doing anything internet related under the gentoo install) the only problem remaining is this:
WARNING - Running *really* short on dma buffers
WARNING - Running *really* short on dma buffers
WARNING - Running *really* short on dma buffers
WARNING - Running *really* short on dma buffers
---
more of the same...
SCSI cdrom error : host 0 channel 0 id 3 lun 0 return code = 10000
I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector xxxxx
cp: read: input/output error
SCSI cdrom error : host 0 channel 0 id 3 lun 0 return code = 10000
I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector xxxxx
cp: read: input/output error
---
more of the same...
I get this when I try to copy stuff from my SCSI CD-RW, both with original discs and discs I've made myself and which work well on other computers. Also when I try to burn CD's I sometimes get input/output errors.
I see several people have a similar problem with Adaptec SCSI adapters using the AIC7xxx driver, think there might be a problem with it?
For instance, Erwann Corvellec said in a earlier mail:
"I am trying to install gentoo-i686-1.2.iso and while executing mke2fs
on a 12GB SCSI partition I get :
Writing superblocks and filesystem accouting information: Warning -
running *really* short on DMA buffers
Warning - running *really* short on DMA buffers
Warning - running *really* short on DMA buffers
...
etc.
The same command doesn't output any warning on gentoo-i686-1.1a.iso.
The gentoo 1.2 kernel flavor is surely the cause. To be more precise, it
is maybe the "Adaptec AIC7xxx" driver revision : 6.2.5 on 1.1a vs 6.2.6
on 1.2.
--
Erwann CORVELLEC"
Only difference is my problems relate to a CD-RW drive and not a harddrive.. it's been a long time since I tried 1.1a so I can't really tell you if I have no problems with that release, but perhaps it's time to look into this? :)
However, I can tell you for sure that this problem did not exist on m$ winblows.

BTW 1.3b will come in even more flavors:
1.3a: [ i586, i686 ]
1.3b [ i586, i686, k6, pentium3, athlon ]
Just wanted to let you know :)

I'm strongly hoping that we can get db 3.2.9 in instead of 3.2.3h.
I've been using 3.2.9 successfully for a few weeks now, and have
built (from stage1) several systems using it.
It fixes numerous bugs in 3.2.3h, including a sigseg when opening
databases in 1.85 compatability mode.
Additionally, python 2.2.1-r1 should be unmasked for testing -- it,
too, has only very minor updates but a single important one (only
relating to build depends, not functional differences). Here's the
changelog entry for python 2.2.1-r1:
*python-2.2.1-r1 (29 May 2002)
29 May 2002; Jon Nelson <jnelson@gentoo.org>: python-2.2.1-r1.ebuild
Add expat to build depends (except during bootstrap), use econf
and emake, and don't mess with Modules/Setup.local because modules
are build as shared on Linux as default.

open office compiled for me (haven't actually tried running it yet though,
since the compile just finished this morning).
xine-ui however does not compile, and there ARE bugs with libarts or with xmms
and how they interact (bug #3712), so having to back kde multimedia off to
-O2 might perhaps be a symptom of something deeper that gcc 3.1 is
uncomfortable with? (I was compiling for a dual P3/1GHz, using the standard
optimizations as with gcc 2.95, except where, e.g. kdemultimedia and some
gnome libraries, I had to back off to -O2).

I have only done one very quick attempt at installing using the 1.3a
tar-ball, at work. the one thing I noticed was that I needed to export
'http_proxy' by hand since all that is supported in the build system is
'HTTP_PROXY', and wget didn't seem to fall back on the uppercase variant
if the lowercase variant was missing.

I've noticed in some cases the configs in /etc/make.conf aren't being
exported.. such as CFLAGS when you try and build wine. A bug maybe? or a
feature?

Read the ebuild for wine. They turn that off on purpose.
