I hope you both have a wonderful vacation - glueckliche Ferien!
For those of us who have already installed and are successfully running a
gentoo system, would we have any need to reinstall and go through all the
30+ hours of compiles to get back to where we are now? Has anything
essential changed, other than having a more reliable boot cdrom and,
hopefully, error free ebuilds?

"emerge system" should upgrade everything that is part of an install. I don't recommend this unless you absolutely need to though.

Just for the record I'm pretty sure all of the other developers will be business as usual. Daniel and Achim are the the only two taking vacation.
