If this helps at all, I've been using MySQL 4 (4.0.12) for about 3 weeks
now on 2 production servers without any hickup or error. I've always
been so impressed with MySQL's stability that I trust when the company
claims something is stable, its probably pretty stable :)
We also saw a large speed increase when using MySQL 4 which was another
compelling reason to use it instead of 3.
Best,
-Riyad

I'd really really like to get MySQL4 unmasked, and am willing to go well
out of my way to help the process along. Does anyone involved with the
work on MySQL or the reverse-dependencies for portage have anything I
can do to help?

MySQL4 itself works fine, we are all aware of that. However after it is
installed, many things need to be recompiled as you are aware. Portage
needs reverse dependancy support for this to become a reality having
people run 'revdep-rebuild' is not the solution (and even that fails in
some cases already).
I do know that more things than MySQL4 are waiting for
reverse-dependancies. OpenSSL 0.9.7 is one of them (it requires a MUCH
larger rebuild than MySQL does).
Carpaski would a better person to ask of the current status of
reverse-dependancies in portage than myself.

Sorry I misunderstood the motivation. I can definitely see your point
about maintenance headache.

I'm also sure it's stable, but I'm not willing to run masked packages on
our main production server. Running masked packages (without unmasking
everything) creates a maintenance headache. I'm trying to help get MySQL
unmasked, so that people like me can use it without maintenance
problems.
As I understand it, the holdup is actually a feature in portage to
automate the rebuilding if packages that link against MySQL, like PHP.

Tell me about it. We get almost 1,800 queries a second, and the query
cache is a /HUGE/ benefit for us.
