I realize that there is all ready a FAQ in place.
The questions that it answers it answers very well; however, adding to it
would
certainly reduce the load on the gentoo-user list.
As Sean says it is a bit threadbare.
Even though gentoo is aimed at developers/sys-admins it is turning out to be
a "learning distribution" . This is why I started using gentoo. I have
used linux
for several years but I have never fully understood the inner workings.
Gentoo
has helped me get on that road.

answers :)) to this thread. I'll put them in faq.xml and commit it. You can
use XML tags described here:

BTW, I just added a section on how to download sources elsewhere (on
broadband) and use them on system with slow connection. It'l appear as soon
as the pages are regenerated.

This one gets asked alot, definitely should be in the FAQ.
Q: make -f Makefile.cvs on a KDE app produces "invalid unused variable" errors
A: Export WANT_AUTOMAKE_1_4=1 for all KDE projects before running make -f
Makefile.cvs. Also, for KDE2 apps export WANT_AUTOCONF_2_1=1, and for KDE3
apps export WANT_AUTOCONF_2_5=1.

Q: .tar.gz sources for installed software is piling up in
/usr/portage/distfiles/ using valuable harddisk-space. Is it safe to
delete these files?
A: Yes, you can safely delete these files. But if you are on a slow
connection, such as a modem, you might want to keep the archives if
possible; often several ebuilds will be released for the same version of
a specific piece of software - if you have deleted the archive and you
upgrade the software it will have to be downloaded from the internet
again.
Corrections/suggestions regarding grammar and language (and pretty much
everything else too) is always welcome.

Hmmm... I've just experienced the joys of completely reinstalling a
server while it was actually running. That is, I installed gentoo on it
while I had the RedHat installation running - and just replaced the
services from the RedHat system with those from the Gentoo chroot one by
one until everything ran from the Gentoo installation. I then did a
quick reboot and had a fully functional Gentoo replacement system
running. Downtime was two minutes.
I think that things like these are worth bringing to people's attention.
I can (probably - if I find a bit of extra time) start writing a guide
on alternate installation methods if you think it's a good idea.
I can also contribute with maybe a bootdisk/netinstall and even a more
automated installation process for people not really knowing what they
are doing - if there is any interest for it

i've said this before: i wouldn't want to make it too easy for
people - thats what made gentoo really fun
yes, a steep learning curve will scare some people away, but it will
make tech support much more easy (in the long)
(perhaps this is all wrong, because then people just start
doing new stuff...)
also, gentoo is constantly under (more or less) heavy development
(getting better every day). brave newbies have no problem dealing
with that, but they can handle heavy documentation as well...
i don't want to kill your attempt on doing something good - i just
personally feel we should not lower the high standards (in terms
of dificulty or "heaviness") of the gentoo documentation
a dedicated gentoo floppy bootdisc really sounds like a good idea
just my 2 cents

For a complete system reinstallation and reconfiguration including data
transfers i would say 2 minutes is rather nice, yeah :D try doing that
with redhat, debian or whatever (no flames, plz)

True. However, I think the installation process is unneccessarily
complex, because you set up the gentoo environment manually, but all the
boot-scripts etc which really teach you the inner workings of linux are
automatically installed. Sure, newbies won't be afraid of recompiling
their kernel etc, but it's not a "complete" learning experience.
But I do know that the feeling most newbies have after installing it
will most certainly motivate them to play around some more with the
linux system (which is what you *should* do with linux; play around),
and this is definitely a good thing. I know I was pretty damn proud
after doing my first lfs install.
Anyways, you've probably had discussions on this before, so I'll just
leave it to the dev's.

hehe, well, there's really nothing stopping me, or anyone else, from
making a GentooEasyInstall(tm) disk/cd which does this, so I wouldn't
have that as my primary business model ;)

Also true, I just thought it would get some pressure off of the mailing
lists and make the gentoo install process a bit more flexible for people
who don't have the skills/creativity to do stuff like this - but if they
don't i guess they shouldn't be doing it in any case :)

In my spare time I've been working on a tiny floppy-based distro which I
was considering using to make a gentoo rescue/install bootdisk. Its not
finished but its got one slick feature (IMHO), which a ~1mb vfat partition
which is mounted at boottime and can contain kernel / modules / libraries
/ apps / etc. If you're interested, we can pool our efforts.

I wrote just such a install guide for installing from another
distro...still waiting on it to go "live", but you can check it out at:
http://www.gibberishcode.net/gentoo-web/xsl/build.html and see how much it
parallels with what you did...it sounds like you did a few extra steps I
didn't know about and thus didn't document.

Ah, nice - then I don't have to get my hands dirty ;)
The extra steps I did are very, very system-dependant (which services
are you running, how is the harddisk partitioned and many other things),

This is nice. I actually did this on one of the servers as well :).
However, WRT original post (adding this to FAQ) I think this should rather go
to install instructions. There was some work done on an updated version, you
can take a look at "Installation insrtruction" thread (or rhater threads as
it came up multiple times). I think the topic was set by Michael Lang.

Great idea, but please check with Michael Lang, who was working on such
install guide (Oh, I see he just responded in a new post).

Well, to be fair that FAQ is getting a little threadbare.
Both lists seem to be getting a lot of repeated questions which aren't
addressed in the current FAQ. If someone wants to spend time contributing
then maybe that would cut down the volume on the lists.

Indeed.
How do 'we' contribute to the FAQ, I know I could send the XML to
bugzilla, but I everybody sends a new XML there will be a *lot* of
work for he who chooses to update the 'real' FAQ.
Or just maybe certain persons have CVS access to that file and maybe
one of theese would accept updates. That's better than he has to
extract all updated from the various lists, no?
Just a thought.

Good to see people wishing to spend their time on docs :-), no really!
Originally I was thinking in terms of individual submissions to bugzilla
listing that or other question which should be included in FAQ.
However since there seems to be quite a few people interested in getting
this done I suppose some coordination can help.
Hereby I announce a call for FAQ submissions.
Shortly I will submit a bug to bugs.gentoo.org and announce its number
here. Bugzilla is a nice place to collect independent submissions IMHO, as
it provides a minimalistic forum-like functionality. Please submit your
Qs&As there. Somebogy, who will volonteer will combine the
question into single <xml> file and will [try to] keep it up to date with
new submissions (quite likely that would be me,
unless somebody has an itch for editorial work :-). I willl wait few days and
then assume this role if there are no volonteers). Regular builds of this
file (2-3 day period in the beginning makes sense) will get attached to the
same bug for an easy incorporation into existing documents.

I have used Gentoo for the last three months.
I have noticed that the user list has been growing exponentially in the
number of posts.
I am finding it more and more difficult to find the time to sift through the
list.
I expect many others out there who could provide the needed assistance
cannot.
The main thing that I have noticed about gentoo web site is the lack of a
user level faq.
I would like to create one.
I have been studying the guide-xml and it makes doc writing much easier.
I have also written a perl script that scours the user-list archive and
creates a XML faq page.
Of course some hand editing is required.
To summarize:
I would like to create/maintain a user-level faq page for gentoo linux.
The page will reside on gentoo's site.
Content of the page will focus on the gentoo distribution.
Off site links to documentation will also be provided where the question is
more general to linux.

Currently there is AFAIK no searchable archive, but you can view the list archive at http://cvs.gentoo.org/pipermail/gentoo-dev/.
If you download the raw archive you could use grep...
I think it isn't too hard to make mailman archives searchable so this could be implemented in future.
