hey i just was to say first of all that gentoo linux is pretty sweet.
it's a nice middle ground for people who've only used redhat and the
like but want to know more about linux.

anyway the reason i'm writing is that i think there should be a guide up
about how to manually compile XFree86 to use tdfx direct rendering
infrastructure.

as you might expect, i had to install glide, install glide-v5, decompile
xfree86, edit the host.def, and compile xfree86.

since i already had the xf86 source from when i emerged it, it wasn't
such a bad deal. but i still had to check newsgroups and look around
for a couple of days before i figured out how exactly to do it.

so if you could throw something up (i'll write if up if you like :p) on
the webpage, i'd feel much better about it.

thanks

ah, so this worked? I havent been able to get my voodoo 3 to work and I'd
apriciate any pointers you might have on the subject. I havent recompiled
X yet, which is my next step.

AFAIK (speaking out of my other end here), the main gentoo developers seem
to be Nvidia folks, so they dont seem to give much of a hoot about tdfx or
DRM/DRI (which is fine and makes total sense). If you can write a
mini-HOWTO on this, that would be great.

3dfx may be gone, but thier cards will linger for a while....I think a
"3dfx" USE variable might be a good idea.....so X can compile properly
when needed and such....hell, USE settings for all the popular chipsets
might be worthwhile.....but, yalls a busy bunch....*shrug*

Hi all,

I get a banshee working on a scratch. The kernel drivers agpgart and
tdfx are compiled as modules. I compile and install glide3, XFree4.1
(in this order) and everything works fine (hardware accelareted 3D). I
think that you don't have to modify conf files for XFree build, they
detect which version of glide you have.

PS: I don't use a scratch anymore, I use a gentoo :-)

Julien
